We have copied this article from the PPBSO website. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ed's family and friends.
It is with a heavy heart and the deepest sorrow that the PPBSO adds its thoughts to the multitude of voices in noting the passing of lifetime member Ed Neigh.
Ed was a member with an accomplished history as a competitor, Pipe Major, adjudicator, composer, and teacher. Ed’s solo competitive successes included both the Piobaireachd Society Gold Medal (Canada) and the Bar to the Medal, the Open March at Oban, and the Dunvegan Medal; as Pipe Major of the grade one Guelph Pipe Band he led the band to success at the North American Championships on several occasions.
In addition to Ed’s competitive success, he is perhaps even more renowned for his contribution to education and adjudication. Ed was one of the preeminent masters of Piobaireachd, who was able to both recognize and teach several different styles of playing. His belief in a methodical approach to the expression of technique within all music allowed his students to find the melodic beauty when integrating technical execution within the rhythm of any tune.
As an adjudicator, Ed was called on to judge contests all over the world; in the past few years focusing on Canada and the United States. His insights provided both solo competitors and bands countless ways in which to improve their playing and performances.
Ed’s support of the piping and pipe band community and its members was unparalleled – especially of young players. He was well loved by all and will be missed. We all mourn the loss of an icon, and the heartfelt best wishes and condolences of the Society go out to Ed’s family and friends.
Update: The funeral for Ed Neigh will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 15th at Knox Presbyterian Church at 50 Erb Street West in Waterloo, Ontario. Visitations will be held at the Erb & Good Funeral Home at 171 King St South in Waterloo on Friday, August 14th from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and again from 7:00 – 9:00 PM.
