Steven McWhirter is a native of Northern Ireland and now resides in Falkirk, Scotland, with his wife Grace and two children Harry and Maggie. He has won the Adult World Solo Drumming Championships on 10 occasions, and is a full time drumming instructor with the Edinburgh Academy & Dollar Academy Pipe Bands. In his spare time he is leading drummer of the current world pipe band champions, Inveraray & District PIpe Band.
Steven began drumming in 1993 at the age of 10, with initial lessons from his father, Dessie. Steven joined his local Cullybackey Pipe Band in 1994, receiving snare instruction from Adrian Hoy until 2001. In 2002 Steven made the move to play with the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band from Vancouver, Canada where he remained until 2008 winning the world championship both as a band and drum corps. In 2004 Steven started teaching the local youths of Inveraray and surrounding Argyll areas pipe band drumming and along with Stuart Liddell helped create the current band he is still a member of today.
Steven is a sought after instructor around the world and regularly teaches in North America, Australia and New Zealand along with a dense number of students who study with him online via skype and facetime.
Professional qualifications include PDQB Level 6, Pipe Band Musicianship Level 1 with the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association and a National Diploma in Business Studies.
